Patient and Public Involvement (PPI)

RDS London offers researchers support, advice and access to a number of free resources to enable and improve patient and public involvement in research.

View our PPI leaflet or read below for more details

What is PPI in Research?

Patient and Public Involvement (also known as user / lay involvement) in research is the formation of an active partnership between patients and / or public and researchers which enables:

Thus PPI goes beyond simply having patients / members of the public as research subjects.

Why is PPI Important?

Involving lay people in research studies can improve the relevance and reliability of results, improve study recruitment and ensure that the outcomes are more patient-focused.

The contributions of patients are considered valuable, providing alternative views from the usual NHS staff perspective. Patients are able to make judgements based on their understanding of their condition and may have different aspirations and thoughts about health outcome that health care professionals and researchers may not have considered.

Increasingly funders of research now require PPI as a condition of funding.

Involving Patients and the Public in Research

RDS London is committed to encouraging active and meaningful PPI at all stages of the research process, providing expert advice and guidance from a dedicated London based team.

We also have strong links with INVOLVE, a national advisory group funded by the Department of Health to promote and support active public involvement in NHS, public health and social care research.

RDS London can facilitate links between research teams and patients / members of the public through a specifically designed database for PPI in London. We can also provide guidance on costings for PPI and advice on the right level of involvement.

As well as being able to point researchers towards training on PPI, RDS London will deliver PPI specific workshops and seminars to groups interested in developing their knowledge in this area.
