Professor Sandra Eldridge, Professor of Biostatistics

Sandra gained a degree in Mathematics from Oxford University in 1979. She then spent two years teaching mathematics in secondary schools, first in Nigeria with Voluntary Service Overseas, then in the UK. In 1982 she completed an MSc in Medical Demography at the London School of Hygeine and Tropical Medicine where she worked for several years before moving to London Metropolitan University (formerly City of London Polytechnic) to teach undergraduate statistics. She joined Queen Mary as a lecturer in medical statistics in 1994, working predominantly in primary care. She developed an interest in cluster randomised trials and completed a doctorate focusing on these trials in 2005. She currently carries out methodological research on cluster randomised trials, collaborative research with colleagues at the Institute for Health Sciences, within the Barts and the London Medical school and more widely, as well taking the lead in several postgraduate teaching modules. She was instrumental in setting up the Royal Statistical Society Primary Health care study group in 2002. In 2006 she was promoted to Reader, and in 2007 to Professor. She is currently joint Centre Lead, director of the fully UKCRC registered Pragmatic Clinical Trials Unit and joint lead of the Barts and The London arm of the London Research Design Service.
Professor Clive Seale, Professor of Medical Sociology
Joint Lead
Clive Seale trained originally as a teacher and pursued a career in educational research and gained a PhD in this field before switching to health research, assisted by his studies for a masters degree in medical sociology. His interests include communication in health care settings, end-of-life care, mass media and health and social research methods. His own work involves use of several different social research methods, including social survey work and a variety of qualitative methods. His textbook, 'Researching Society and Culture' (Sage 2004) provides a general introduction to social research methods and he has published widely on qualitative methods. Following appointments as professor of sociology in Goldsmiths and Brunel University, he joined Barts and the London SMD (Queen Mary University of London) in September 2008.
Jan Whalley, Administrator
Jan has extensive experience in office administration, having spent time working for the NHS, various health-based Charities and Further Education establishments. She took up the position of Administrator for the Queen Mary arm of the Research Design Service in June 2009.
